So, NYC got another terrorist attack, the third in the past couple of years (no casualties in any of them – thank God) and finally the newspapers decide to report on it!Literally, when the first attack happened and the British embassy here in NYC was bombed, it was fourth page news behind that runaway bride nonsense that happened way back when... I'm glad that for once actual news is taking over the newsstands!
Honestly though, the MTA boasts about having over 1900 people who reported "suspicious packages" in the subways and bus stations in the past year, but not a single one of those have actually turned out to be anything closely related to terrorism. The bombings at the Mexican and British embassies, and now the Times Square bombing have gone completely unnoticed by commuters and law enforcement officers alike. For all the paranoia and scare tactics they're using to make sure New Yorkers stay content with their police state, there isn't a cursed thing we have to show for it. Well, save maybe for an influx of stress related heart conditions and mental disorders.
Honestly, if people paid as much attention to what McDonald's is doing to destroy life as they did to how much terrorists threaten it, this world would be such a better place.
On the plus side, this did not effect my commute in any measurable way. It actually seemed to go along more smoothely than usual. Evidently, when someone "sees something", my commute gets pushed back an hour and re-routed through Lower Manhattan, but if an actual bomb goes off near a subway station that I go through every morning, things go smoother.
You said it right - scare tactics. That's why it surprises me that they didn't make big news out of the other attacks. I've been ignoring the news of late, because it really sickens me and I don't want to walk around angry at the world.

It's a painful irony on a few levels, Fabio...
First, since they are trying to freak us out so bad, why didn't they publicise the other two bombings we've had more extensively? I mean, maybe they didn't fit the criteria for "will scare general populace stiff" because they were so obviously political targets? Maybe because it was aimed at Mexicans and Limeys the media figured they didn't matter?
On another level, this is the kind of stuff that is important enough to take up space in newspapers. Just about all of the shennanigans of the puppets running for election, celebrity nonsense, and old news about baseball players being a bunch of 'roided out freaks really can and should be relegated to the most inaccessible pages of the paper, if they're included at all. These things *are* important, and there are even graver matters than these that we should be informed about. Are we? No. We're just sold more delusions, more discomfort and more misinformation.
Gotta' love the free-freakin' press!

"it really sickens me and I don't want to walk around angry at the world."
I was über peeved with the newsworthy items on another day that will live in infamy, culminating with the murders in an East Jerusalem seminary - until I was stopped dead in my sniper tracks, after popping through my Messianic friend, Mrs. Lisa Cleere's MySpace (she featured a song from Rent on her profile, go figure):

She's also a sharp, savvy pundit herself, of the socialist persuasion (when she's not working her ass off for crumbs @ the mall):
